Official Data vs Observed Reality: The Contradiction Problem
I've spent years watching organizations make million-dollar bets on data that hasn't been true in months. The register says the building is maintained. The street says the facade is crumbling. The register says the road is good. The potholes say otherwise.
Every organization that touches the physical world runs on two information systems. The system of record — registers, logs, permits, filings. And the system of reality — what's actually there, right now, under your feet.
When they agree, life is easy. When they don't, expensive things happen.
Why records drift from reality
The gap isn't corruption. It's gravity. Four forces pull them apart:
Lag. The register describes the world as of its last update. That update might be two years old. The freeze-thaw cycle doesn't wait for reporting season.
Incentives. The people reporting the data are the same people judged by it. Maintenance logged as complete by the crew responsible for completing it. Surprising how often it checks out.
Granularity. District-level statistics can be true on average and wrong about every single street. "The neighborhood is stable" means nothing when your building is the one falling apart.
Definitional drift. Someone, somewhere, once defined "maintained" and "operational" for a database. That someone wasn't you. That purpose wasn't yours.
Divergence is a signal, not an error
Most people treat contradictions as data-quality problems. Scrub them. Fix them. Make the numbers match.
This is backwards. Contradictions are the highest-information data points you have.
Where record and reality agree, you learn nothing new. Where they diverge, one of your assumptions is wrong. The size of the gap tells you how wrong. The direction tells you who's lying — the paper or the street.
Operationalising the contradiction
We pair official datasets with continuous field observation from the quiXzoom network — verified, geo-tagged, timestamped, consensus-scored. Then we compute the contradiction explicitly: where the layers diverge, by how much, with what confidence, and whether the gap is widening.
The contradiction score isn't an error to be fixed. It's intelligence to be acted on.
