Field Data vs Satellite Imagery: When to Use What
I remember the first time I saw a satellite image of a bridge I had just stood under. From orbit, it looked pristine. From below, the bearings were rusted through and the concrete was spalling in chunks you could fit in a backpack. Same bridge. Two realities. That is the lie of the God's-eye view — it is seductive, comprehensive, and fundamentally blind to what matters at ground level.
Satellites and field observers are not competitors. They are different species. The trick is knowing which one to trust for what — and how to make them talk to each other.
What satellites do well
Satellite imagery excels at coverage and consistency. A single pass can image thousands of square kilometres at uniform resolution. Wide-area assessment. Change detection over time. Comparison across regions that would bankrupt any ground-based operation.
Modern commercial satellites hit 30-50 cm ground sample distance — enough to spot road construction, vegetation clearance, building demolition, flood extent. SAR satellites cut through clouds and darkness like they are not even there. And the consistency is beautiful: same sensor, same calibration, every time. Subtract last month's image from this month's and the difference screams what changed.
I do not deny any of this. Satellites are genuinely powerful. The question is not whether they are useful. The question is where their perspective creates blind spots that swallow the truth whole.
What satellites cannot do
Resolution limits are obvious but worth stating: a 50 cm pixel cannot resolve a crack in pavement, corrosion on a bridge bearing, or graffiti signalling a neighbourhood in decline. These conditions demand centimetre-scale detail that no satellite constellation can deliver.
Angle and occlusion are worse. Satellites look down. They cannot see under bridges, inside tunnels, or behind buildings. Vertical surfaces — retaining walls, bridge piers, building facades — are poorly resolved or simply invisible. The built environment presents most of its meaningful signals horizontally, at street level, and satellites are looking from the wrong direction entirely.
Timeliness is the third killer. Commercial satellites revisit every few days at best, often every few weeks. A condition that develops and worsens between passes is a ghost story to satellite monitoring. And ordering targeted imagery? Expensive and slow. By the time it arrives, the moment may have passed.
What field data does well
Field observation provides the detail and access that satellites cannot touch. A trained contributor at ground level can assess crack width, measure pothole depth, photograph bridge bearings, document drainage blockages. They can access spaces satellites cannot see and inspect assets from angles satellites cannot achieve.
Timeliness is where field data shines. Contributors can be directed to specific assets on demand, providing observation within hours rather than weeks. Rapid response to reported issues. Verification of satellite-detected changes. Priority assessment of critical assets when time is blood.
Most importantly, field observation captures context. A photo of a cracked road surface includes the surrounding drainage, vegetation, traffic pattern, adjacent land use. This context is essential for understanding why a condition exists and what intervention is appropriate. A satellite pixel tells you something changed. A field photo tells you what, why, and what to do about it.
What field data cannot do
Coverage is the hard limit. Field observation requires physical presence. A single contributor can assess tens of assets per day, not thousands. Comprehensive coverage of a large network demands many contributors, extensive coordination, significant cost.
Consistency is a challenge. Different observers assess the same condition differently. Training, calibration, quality control are essential but never perfect. The result is more variable than satellite data, where the same sensor captures every image.
And access constraints are real. Private property, dangerous conditions, regulatory restrictions limit where observers can go. Some assets simply cannot be assessed from the ground.
The integrated approach
The optimal strategy uses both sources, with each compensating for the other's limitations. Satellites provide wide-area screening, identifying zones of change or concern. Field observation follows up, providing detailed assessment of priority areas.
